The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek in collaboration with MTN Namibia hosted a two-day simulation of the General Assembly for high school youth at the Safari Court Hotel from 19-20 September 2018. This was the 7th Model United Nations Namibia (MUNNAM) Conference to be held with participants stemming from the Khomas, Erongo, Otjikoto and Hardap region. A total of 15 high schools in Namibia were represented at the conference.
Speaking on behalf of the UN System Namibia, Dr. Charles Segoe-Moses, WHO Representative, said, “Today as you stand in the shoes of delegates that represent their respective countries, think not only of yourself but the millions of young people that depend on you to lead the youth agenda.” He went on to say, “MUNNAM may just look like a role playing, but in reality, you are preparing yourself to be global citizens. Some of you may make these issues your life’s work and maybe you will find yourselves as humanitarian workers someday or working for the envoy on youth. The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek team participated in a public lecture aimed at raising awareness of the importance of blood donation on the Wednesday, 16 August.
The public lecture, the third of its kind, was held at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST)under the theme “Give Blood, Give Now, Give Often”. It was hosted by the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NAMBTS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Namibia.
The blood donation public lectures are aimed towards educating the public on the different facets of the blood transfusion services in Namibia, with particular emphasis on the shortage of consistent blood donors in the country, as this leads to a shortage in supply. Continue reading →
On the 13th of July 2017, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek team visited Jan Mohr Secondary School in Windhoek to carry out the third instalment of the #PeacePals project.
The #PeacePals project is designed to increase awareness on the importance of sustainable peace by educating young adults on the Sustainable Developments Goals (SDG’s) with particular emphasis on SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).The project was initiated to start a global conversation on peace by providing students with the opportunity to share their opinion with other students across the globe.
The presentation was focused on the significance of peace as a prerequisite for the alleviation of most humanitarian crises we’re faced with today as well as the different UN bodies focused on conflict resolution. Particular emphasis was placed on the tragic consequences that resulted from wars and genocides in different countries around the world by highlighting the refugee crisis in Europe.Continue reading →
The United Nations celebrates the International Day of Happiness as a way to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world. This year on 20 March, the global community was joined by the Smurfs in commemorating the day.
Through the “Small Smurfs Big Goals” campaign, the Smurfs encouraged young people everywhere to learn about and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 SDGs aim to make the world more peaceful, equitable and healthy.
Taking up the call of the Smurfs to achieve the Goals, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek spread happiness and raised awareness of the SDGs with pre-schoolers at Windhoek Gymnasium Pre-Primary on 28 March 2017.
The UNIC Windhoek team, who emulated the Smurfs by wearing white and blue on the day, taught the learners about the International Day of Happiness and what they can do to make other people happy. Through an engaging presentation and video from the Smurfs, the pre-primary learners understood why they should support and spread awareness of the 17 SDGs. Continue reading →

Each year, on 9 December, the world marks International Anti-Corruption Day. We treat this not only as a means to raise awareness, but also as an opportunity to showcase innovative ways that people and organizations can work together to counter this scourge.
Corruption affects each and every one of us: our healthcare suffers when funds for medical equipment are stolen; our education systems are hit when school budgets are illegally siphoned off; and our political institutions are undermined when bribes are paid and kickbacks sought.
The transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to which the world committed last year, has put efforts to fight corruption in context and has given us a new perspective. Preventing and fighting corruption is an essential investment to the infrastructure that we need to put in place to achieve the 2030 Agenda. Our challenge is to create and sustain effective, transparent and accountable institutions at all levels.
The task that we have ahead of us therefore is to develop a new norm – one where corruption is not seen as part of life, or as a part of doing business, or where impunity is accepted.
On Wednesday, 14 September 2016, the UN System in Namibia visited the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) for the Public Dialogue: 2016 International Education Day regarding the theme of ‘ensuring international cooperation to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’.
Before the dialogue started, students and lecturers read through United Nations publications at an exhibit run by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek. The UNIC Windhoek Team displayed publications from various UN Agencies that work in Namibia in an effort to enlighten the public about the United Nations, its work specifically in Namibia and its efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through diverse projects.
Scores of curious students and lecturers visited the exhibition, and many students picked up publications that related to their fields of study in order to assist in achieving their individual education goals and to increase their knowledge. Other students inquired about the requirements necessary to intern at the various UN agencies located in Namibia, sharing their goals of working for the United Nations. Continue reading →
