Waldorf School learners become #PeacePals

After learning about the importance of international peace, students at Waldorf School, situated on the eastern edge of Windhoek, became #PeacePals and wrote postcards of peace to learners in Indonesia on 15 August 2017.

The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek team is aiming to reach 1,000 learners through its #PeacePals programme, and Waldorf School was the fourth of five schools that the Centre will be visiting this year.

Starting off with the presentation, approximately 70 students learned about the negative consequences of conflict on individuals, communities and countries and the different UN bodies focused on conflict resolution and the promotion of peace. The students became aware of how violence directly disrupts social life and opportunities for human prosperity after learning about the refugee crisis in Europe. Passionate about the topic, students frequently chimed in during the presentation to share their concerns with global peace. Continue reading

#Proud to Serve, UNIC highlights Public Servants ahead of UN Public Service Day

The UN Public Service Day celebrates the value and virtue of public service to the Namibian community .In promoting the upcoming United Nations Public Service Day on 23 June, UNIC Windhoek will share stories of public servants over the course of the week.

The purpose of the UNIC Windhoek digital communication outreach initiative is to recognize public servants’ contribution to sustainable development. It also aims at providing a platform to share ideas, knowledge and innovative practices from around the world on how public institutions can best support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During an interview with Mr. Reinhardt Tsamaseb, a teacher at Vooruitsig Junior Secondary School in Rehoboth, he reins in on his passion as an educator for more than 13 years.

Mr. Tsamaseb is a native of Otjimbingwe which is situated south of Karibib, began his teaching career in the village of Gochas in 2004, but moved to Gibeon a year later, where he stayed until 2007. He has been teaching at Vooruitsig Junior Secondary School in Rehoboth since 2008. Mr. Tsamaseb recalls working as a sales manager in Windhoek when he discovered this noble calling to be a pedagogue.

“I am passionate about teaching. I was working in the retail industry, selling clothes, but I felt this itch to teach and I have the power to harness of learners along with my own power. You also become good at maximizing the best in children to bring out their greatest assets. And you’re teaching them to deal with chaos in unknown situations themselves by supporting them in exercises that allow them to explore the unknown. Continue reading

Teachers learn about High School Practicum Programme

Teachers from secondary schools across Windhoek visited the UN House in Klein Windhoek on Tuesday, 28 April to learn about the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek’s High School Practicum Programme (HSPP).

The HSPP, the first programme of its kind worldwide, began in 2016. It is designed for the Namibian child and involves real life experience working in an international development environment and engaging with UN Staff mentors.

Each day of the two-week long programme, HSPP participants learn about the United Nations, its work and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and their skills are put to the test through educational and interactive practical sessions.

UNIC Windhoek share latest Africa Renewal Publication with local editorial teams

UNIC Windhoek is responsible for the distribution of public information to the media, the public, government and key stakeholders. In fulfillment of its ongoing mission to provide up to date information and the latest publications from Head Quarters and other UN agencies to all stakeholders, UNIC Windhoek shared the latest African Renewal Publication with all media outlets in Windhoek on 25 January 2017. Editors from all major print and radio stations received hand delivered copies of the magazine for information purposes.

The Africa Renewal Magazine is a product of the Africa Renewal Information Programme. The Magazine first appeared in 1987 and provides up-to-date information and analysis of the major economic and development challenges facing Africa today.  Continue reading

UNIC Windhoek learns about the Holocaust for a ‘better future’

27 January 2016- On the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek staff learned about this tragic and defining point in history through a dynamic exhibition at the UN House in Windhoek, Namibia

The exhibition is part of UNIC Windhoek’s Holocaust Educational Outreach Programme, which this year is focusing on “Holocaust Remembrance: Educating for a Better Future”.

This theme “emphasises the universal dimension of Holocaust education as a platform for building respect for human rights, increasing tolerance and defending our common humanity” (UN International Observances).

The UNIC Windhoek staff learned about the importance of the genocide prevention and are ready to share this knowledge with their peers.

The exhibition is open to the public and will be set up at the UN House for the next two weeks. Continue reading

#WednesdayCelebrateWomen: UNIC Windhoek celebrates education planning specialist Frances Ferreira

francis, wcwEach Wednesday, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek celebrates women and their accomplishments. This Wednesday, UNIC Windhoek celebrates education planning, policy and management specialist Frances Ferreira, the founding Director of the Namibian College of Open Learning.

Born in the southern town of Mariental, Frances hails from a large family of ten children. A professional and mother of four beautiful daughters, Ferreira’s life’s work and passion has taken her across the world. Our Namibian education specialist is currently in Pakistan with the GIRLS Inspire project, serving as the Senior Advisor, Women and Girls.

Frances has more than thirty years’ experience in the field of education and education management in various contexts, including basic education, technical and vocational education, adult and continuing education as well as open and distance learning (ODL).

She has worked with government ministries, statutory bodies, international development agencies, education and training institutions, non-governmental and community-based organisations throughout Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Caribbean. Frances has also edited and co-authored various publications.  Continue reading

#PeacePals: Jakob Marengo learners pen thoughts on peace

dsc_0194After participating in a climate change outreach in February, hosting a climate change workshop in April, taking part in the #ProsperousPaths inititative and hosting Dr. Helena Ndume in light of Nelson Mandela Day, Jakob Marengo Secondary School in Khomasdal was paid another informative visit by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek team on Wednesday, 28 September. A group of twenty students participated in the #PeacePals programme and had the opportunity to share their thoughts on the outreaches the UNIC Windhoek team has brought to the school.

The Principal of Jakob Marengo Secondary School Ms. Ottilie Abrahams, who is no stranger to UNIC Windhoek’s work, welcomed the team with a smile and expressed her excitement that Jakob Marengo’s pupils would participate in commemorating the International Day of Peace through an educational, writing exercise. UNPAF Poverty Pillar discusses poverty with DHPS secondary level Learners

dsc_0005On Thursday, 22 September 2016, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek on behalf of the United Nations Partnership Assistance Framework (UNPAF) Poverty Pillar visited the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS) for its Project Day, at which students had the opportunity to talk with ‘experts’ from diverse sectors in Namibia in regards to poverty eradication and urbanisation.

Starting off the morning, the experts introduced themselves to the students in the school’s auditorium. Then, the students had the opportunity to visit different classrooms to have one-on-one conversations with experts, to hear more information about each expert’s work as well as to ask questions.

Four groups of bright, enthusiastic learners visited UNIC Windhoek’s room to learn more about poverty in Namibia as well as the work dsc_0036of the United Nations. Starting off the presentation, Ms. Anthea Basson, the National Information Officer asked the students what poverty means to them. The students, who had an in-depth understanding of poverty, mentioned that there are two different types of poverty including absolute poverty and relative poverty. Continue reading

UN Namibia stresses the importance of education for sustainable development at NUST Dialogue

NUST 5On Wednesday, 14 September 2016, the UN System in Namibia visited the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) for the Public Dialogue: 2016 International Education Day regarding the theme of ‘ensuring international cooperation  to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’.

Before the dialogue started, students and lecturers read through United Nations publications at an exhibit run by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek. The UNIC Windhoek Team displayed publications from various UN Agencies that work in Namibia in an effort to enlighten the public about the United Nations, its work specifically in Namibia and its efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through diverse projects.

NUST 10Scores of curious students and lecturers visited the exhibition, and many students picked up publications that related to their fields of study in order to assist in achieving their individual education goals and to increase their knowledge. Other students inquired about the requirements necessary to intern at the various UN agencies located in Namibia, sharing their goals of working for the United Nations. Continue reading

#UN4U: Gammas Primary School pupils want to spark change in Namibia

On Tuesday, 16 August 2016, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek Team set out for Gammas Primary School in Khomasdal, Windhoek, excited to bring the #UN4U to another school in the capital city.

The UNIC Windhoek team was welcomed by the principal and was escorted to the hall, where the students were already assembled waiting with excitement for the UNIC Windhoek team to arrive and for the presentation to commence.

EDSC_0349The presentation started with a brief introduction of the United Nations, with a special look at its establishment and the work it does. Because the information in this part of the presentation is mostly fact-based, there has not been a lot of participation at the previous 6 schools that took part in the #UN4U program. However, this was not the case with the learners at Gammas Primary School.

The students confidently answered questions concerning the establishment of the UN as well as who the Secretary-General is, and some of them even shared with the team that they wanted to grow up to be the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

EDSC_0301This immense engagement with the students was only a sign of bigger things to come, as the learners were so excited that their hands were up in the air the entire time throughout the second half of the presentation.

The students not only answered questions the UNIC Windhoek team posed to them, but also asked the team very interesting questions such as; ‘If the rich were to give to the poor would this lessen the gap between the rich and the poor?’ and, ‘Is education the way to go?’ One of the learners, who had an immense understanding of history, spoke about colonialism and how this contributed to poverty.

EDSC_0313When asked how they will help achieve the SDGs, the learners shared their plans of choosing a career through which they can make a difference in the lives of those around them. One learner confidently stood up and said, “I would like to study medicine and become a good doctor so that I can open my own hospital and help people.”

The social studies teachers came up to the presenters afterwards and complimented them on a job well done. The UNIC Windhoek team, impressed by the learners’ level of discipline and knowledge, praised the pupils.

Up-to-date, the #UN4U program has reached primary level students at seven different schools across Windhoek. Not only did students increase their knowledge of the United Nations, but these students have been inspired to bring about change and to achieve the SDGs. Encouraged by the positive reception of the #UN4U program, UNIC Windhoek plans to bring similar initiatives to schools in the future.EDSC_0387
