UNIC Windhoek collaborated with the United Nations Information Service to publicise the launch of the The International Narcotics Control Board’s Annual Report for 2015. In the absence of hosting a formal report launch, UNIC engaged with the media on a one on one basis, providing press material as well as pre – briefing call information with the INCB President Mr. Sipp on Monday, 29 February 2016.
Information packages were dispatched to editors and information released to the wider media fraternity as well. The information as well as report was also uploaded to the UNIC website, UN Namibia website and social media channels.
The report publishes global data on findings on consumption of narcotic drugs and Psychotropic substances under international control which are compared with impediments reported by 106 countries. It gives further detail on the distribution abuse and use of these medicinal substances, also on how substances like Codeine and Morphine are being abused instead of these substances going to the people that are desperately in need of pain relieving medication.
Further, it highlights the needs for governments to review existing legislation and regulatory systems, improve health systems and provide training for health care Professionals to improve access to internationally controlled substances.
The information is useful for the public in order to help combat illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and ensure adequate access of these medicines worldwide.
